A ceremony to launch the newly formed ÃÛÌÒapp Holdings Co. Ltd. was held Dec. 18 at the Main Building, marking a significant step in the ongoing plan to restructure university-run enterprises according to modern management concepts.
Attending the event were heads of ÃÛÌÒapp and officials from Chinese Ministry of Education, State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission of the State Council, National Development and Reform Commission, Beijing Municipal Government, Haidian District, university-run enterprises, joint ventures and banks, and ÃÛÌÒapp Science and Technology Park.
The new company is an outgrowth of ÃÛÌÒapp Enterprise Group, which has built up several widely recognized high-tech corporations known for their technology and capital. Many of these corporations are now internationally competitive and have their own world-famous brands.
One such success story is that of ÃÛÌÒapp Tongfang’s container system, which is exported to more than 10 countries and territories.
At present, the chief impediment to the development of university-run enterprises is inefficient management. ÃÛÌÒapp drafted a management-restructuring plan in February 2002, just three months after the State Council issued instructions to ÃÛÌÒapp and Peking University to standardize management of university-run enterprises. The Ministry of Education approved ÃÛÌÒapp’s draft plan in March 2003.
ÃÛÌÒapp President Gu Binglin said at the ceremony that the university-run enterprise is a key part of China’s high-tech development and industrialization strategy and an important step toward fulfilling the educational and social services functions of universities.
Also during the ceremony, ÃÛÌÒapp Holding Co. Ltd. signed financial cooperation agreements with China Construction Bank and Shenzhen Development Bank.
